One morning there was a tiger who woke up and just felt great. He felt so good, he went out and concerned a small monkey and roared at him. “Who is the mightiest of all the jungle animals?” The poor little monkey replied, “You are of course, no one is mightiest than you”.
A little while late, this tiger confronted a deer and bellowed out, “Who is the greatest and strongest of all the jungle animals?” The deer was shaking so hard it almost could not speak, but managed to say, “Oh great tiger, you are by far the mightiest animal in the jungle”.
The tiger walked proudly to an elephant that was quietly eating some weeds and roared at the top of his voice, “Who is the mightiest of all the animals in the jungle?”
Then this elephant grabbed the tiger with his trunk, pick him up, slamed him down, pick him up again and shook him until the tiger was just a blur of orange and black. Finally, the elephant threw him violently into a nearly tree. The tiger staggered to his feet and looked at the elephant and said, “Man, just because you don’t know the answer, you don’t have to get so angry!”

Long, long time ago there lived two brothers. They had completely different characters. The big brother was very stingy and greedy. He never shared his wealth with poor people. The little brother was exactly the opposite. He was generous and kind to poor people. He even had no money left because he had shared it with the poor.
One day the generous brother was sitting in his garden when suddenly a little bird fell on his lap. It was wounded. He took care of it, fed it, and put it in a nice cage. After the bird was healthy, the generous brother let it fly. After some time the bird returned to him and gave him a watermelon seed.
The generous brother, then, planted the seed and watered it until it grew into a good watermelon plant. Yet, the plant was very strange. It had only one fruit; a big and heavy one. When the watermelon was ripe enough, the generous brother picked it and cut it into two. How surprised he was. The watermelon was full of gold.
The generous brother sold the gold and became very rich. He built a big house and bought very large field. Still he never forgot to share the wealth with the poor.

One day a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who was a conceited creature, boasted how clever she was. “Why, I know at least a hundred tricks to get away from our mutual enemies, the dogs,” she said.
“I know only one trick to get away from dogs,” said the cat. “You should teach me some of yours!”
“Well, maybe some day, when I have the time. I may teach you a few of the simpler ones,” replied the fox airily. Just then they heard the barking of a pack of dogs in the distance. The barking grew louder and louder, the dogs were coming in their direction! At once the cat ran to the nearest tree and climbed into its branches, well out of reach of any dog. “This is the trick I told you about, the only one I know,” she called down to the fox. “Which one of your hundred tricks are you going to use?”
The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick she should use. Before she could make up her mind, the dogs arrived. They fell upon the fox and tore her to pieces.
A single plan that works is better than a hundred doubtful plans.

“No, thank you,” said the goat.

“But the grass tastes better down here!” said the exasperated wolf, “Why dine alone?”

Olih and his mother loved helping people; although, they were poor. That’s why, people loved them because they were not only kind but also generous.
One evening, there were seven old women came to their house. They asked for food and a place to stay. Olih and his mother gave them food and let those women stay with them. They were very thankful to Olih and his mother because of their generosity.
In the morning, Olih’s mother asked him to wake those women up. Suddenly, Olih screamed. “Mom, please come here!” Olih’s mother rushed to the bedroom and found abundant rice. The seven old women were not there. Instead, there was a beautiful little girl. She told Olih and hi mother that her father had sent her to their house. He had asked her to give delicious rice as a refund for their kindness. They called the rice beras pulut or glutinous rice, which means sticky and delicious rice. Olih and his mother did not forget to give some rice to their neighbors.

They were singing, laughing, and eating delicious food, except an old woman who still stayed in her house. She is too old and weak to go to the party. At home, the old woman felt very sad and lonely. She was hungry, but he found no food in the kitchen. Her daughter-in-law did not cook that day. At the party, the son asked her wife to take some food from the party to his mother at home. His wife did so. Then, she asked her son to deliver it.
The old woman was so happy that she finally got something to eat. However her happiness turned into sadness because she found that someone had eaten the food. There was only little rice left. The fish jut had the bones. She couldn’t stay any longer. She cried and cried. She thought her son had disrespected and neglected her. The old woman didn’t know that it was her grandson who had eaten the food. He did that on the way from the party to the house.
In her anger, the old woman cursed her son. Suddenly, there was a great earthquake! Thunder struck the village and heavy rain started to fall. Slowly, the field turned into a lake. Finally, the whole village turned into a lake. People named the lake Lau Kawar.

Once upon a time in West Sumatra, a widow took her two children to a party. Her children, a boy and a girl, were very happy. They wore beautiful clothes to the party. They found delicious foods, and saw many guests in the party. The children were having a great time.
There was also a traditional music show. The show crowded with people. The children asked her mother if they could see the music show which was located a few meters away.
“Yes, you two may go there. But please remember, don’t go too far,” said the mother. The children ran to the stage where the music show was performed. They enjoyed the music, but soon they were bored just watching the show. So they took a walk around the stage. They forgot their mother’s message not to go too far.
After a while, they saw a pond. The water was very clear and fresh. Because the sun was very hot, they were tempted to play in the water. So they took off their clothes and jumped into the water. They swam together happily. It felt so fresh.
Meanwhile, the party was almost over. The mother remembered her two children. She felt so desperate because she could not find them. The day turned into night. The children were still missing. The mother only cried and cried, and she went home without her children.
After a long hour of crying, she fell asleep and had a dream about her children. In her dream, she met an old woman. The old woman told her, “Your children are in the pond near the party house. If you want to see them, throw a handful of rice into the pond. Your children will appear.”
As soon as he woke up, she quickly ran to the pond. She also had a handful of rice in her hand. When she reached the pond, she threw the rice into the pond and called out her children’s names. The dream came true! Two big fish with beautiful colors appeared in the pond. The mother cried when he saw them. Her children had turned into big beautiful fish because they disobeyed their mother’s message. The mother cried and cried again. All the people of the village cheered her up, but she was still very sad.
The village where the pond was located is now called Desa Sungai Jernih. It is called so because the water in the pond is very clear. Dessa Sungai Jernih is located in the northern part of Nagari Baso in Agam Regency, West Sumatra. The name of the village also reminds people today in West Sumatra that it is important to obey our parents.
